Why Notre Dame?

Notre Dame is an adventure that will develop more than just your intellect. Blessed Basil Moreau, founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, believed that to provide a true education “the mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart.” What excites you about attending Notre Dame? (required response, 150-200 words)

As I travelled to Tanzania, I realized that many people in Moshi Village suffered from unemployment and poverty. When shopping at a local fabric market, I wondered if subsidizing exports would stimulate the local economy. Standing in the middle of the dying market, I heard my calling; I want to become a policy-maker in a third-world developing country’s central bank to fight poverty and bring economic welfare to more people.

Therefore, I was jubilant when I read an article about Joseph Kaboski, a professor in Notre Dame. I was deeply inspired by his story of working in Armenia and fighting poverty internationally. His action and pursuit resonated with my intention of learning economics. For my journey of fighting poverty, Notre Dame is a perfect start.

The unique courses such as Development Economics and Health Economics will enhance my understanding of economic models in a creative fashion. I am exhilarated about Internships at the Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities, where I could work with inspirational faculties on innovative solutions to poverty. I hope, ten years later, that I will return to Tanzania as a graduate from Notre Dame and work with the local government to improve economic welfare of people there.
